2017: Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in
the Spanish Civil War

The Spanish Civil War continues to exert both a tragic and romantic pull on our imaginations. It is the conflict at the heart of Ernest Hemingway’s novel FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, and is now the subject of a book by journalist and historian ADAM HOCHSCHILD. The war, which lasted from 1936-1939, drew some 3,000 American volunteers who joined the fight against the fascist forces led by the ultimately victorious Francisco Franco. Hochschild focuses on a dozen of those Americans, weaving their stories together in a compelling, almost novelistic narrative. He will take us to Spain and back to those heady, heartbreaking days.
