Abraham Verghese and The Covenant of Water

By:

Recipient of the 2023 SVWC Writer in the World Prize given in recognition of his contributions to literature, medicine, and our understanding of the profound link between healing, the humanities, and storytelling, author and physician ABRAHAM VERGHESE will share with us personal reflections on his life and work. He will also speak about his acclaimed new novel, The Covenant of Water, chosen by Oprah for her Book Club. More than a decade in writing, it spans the years 1900 to 1977 and is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, where it follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere.
