Sun 1st Breakout #1: WHAT MAKES A GREAT NOVEL

By:

What does it take to write a great novel: what craft, what creativity, what commitment? Two of our most celebrated novelists, SUSAN CHOI and KIRAN DESAI, will address those questions in a deep-dive discussion about the challenges and joys of writing fiction. Their latest books, Choi’s Flashlight and Desai’s The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny—both shortlisted for the Booker Prize—tell heart-gripping stories that span decades and continents. How do they craft such complex stories? How much research is involved? Do they know the ending before they begin? In a conversation with SVWC Literary Director JOHN BURNHAM SCHWARTZ, the two authors will enlighten us about their life’s work.
